The Daigo Temple in Kyoto, Japan, owns a lot of land; an entire (small) mountain, in fact. Across from the house where I live was a stand of not very thick sugi trees, and it was a nice buffer of woodsy quiet. The Temple razed it and has built a learning center for young monks. Here is an early moment in the construction, with some rebar coming "through the window". The sorry building in the background has traditional tsuchi kabe clay walls built on bamboo lathwork, but the tile roof was not renewed in time, so the rains did their worst. I don't know why it is being preserved in this state when so much money and effort is spent right next-door.
