Every February 26th at the Daigo Temple in Kyoto, Japan, the popular Godairiki Festival is held. After a purification ceremony, the sacred fire is lit so that paper charms purchased by the Buddhist faithful can be imbued with protective power when they are exposed to the smoke. Soon after the fire is lit, the head monk shown here performs a ceremonial ritual while the other monks chant sutras.
