Daigo Temple, Kyoto, Japan, during the annual Godairiki Festival on February 26th. Here, a monk is blowing a horagai, conch shell, leading a procession of monks from the sacred space. The instrument has a penetrating, otherworldly sound, and a sequence of notes from deep to piercing can be produced by overblowing the fundamental harmonic. I don't know the proper term for the small lacquered cap on the monks' foreheads, but perhaps they protect the "third" eye. |
