Daigo Temple, Kyoto, Japan, during the annual Godairiki Festival on February 26th. Throughout the morning and afternoon, the sacred fire burns down, is tended and rebuilt. When covered with fresh pine boughs, the smoke is especially thick before the flames rise up. But the protective charms being exposed to the smoke and fire by the "yamabushi" (mountain ascetics) should be efficatious no matter the fire's state.
