3-D Views:  Three lens de Wijs “Master”
View-Master stereo viewer,
with handle

The de Wijs Master View-Master viewer is an ideal device for experiencing View-Master content individually. Part of the enjoyment of many commercial reels, however, lies in the printed captions provided for each of the seven stereo pairs.

As a child, it was easy to read the small type that appears in the central open window of View-Master viewers. Forty years later, reading this fine print is impossible at close distances.

Pictured below is a Master viewer with a 5X Eschenbach magnifier attached by a 3mm machine screw. The simple but high-quality double convex lens is mounted in a well-made metal frame, so it appears right at home between the metal ocular tubes on either side. The magnifier lets me read the reel captions comfortably, and at close range.

Made of solid aluminum and brass, the Master is heavier than most other View-Master viewers. At home, I prefer using it mounted at a convenient height on a small table tripod. But since it has the convenient threaded mounting hole, a handle can also be easily attached.

I used a Lutz file handle that has a nice ferrule, with a short length of stainless steel threaded rod and a washer epoxied in. Small rubber feet added to the back of the Hakuba M70 fluorescent panel prevent the viewer from sliding around when it is put down. The handle is light enough to remain horizontal when the combination rests on a flat surface.
